Wi‑Fi is an extension of the Ethernet standard into wireless communication, and it is specified in IEEE Standard 802.11. It has a range of up to 500 meters with free line‑of‑sight in the 2.4 GHz band and up to 150 meters in the 5 GHz band. The 5 GHz band and provides the possibility for 19 additional non‑overlapping channels in addition to the three non‑overlapping channels in the 2.4 GHz band. The bandwidth has been constantly increased by new versions of the IEEE 802.11 standard going from 11 Mbps in the IEEE 802.11b to several hundred Mbps in the 802.11ac. New revisions are currently in development.
